Seven Myths about Boudoir Photography

1. Boudoir photography is only for certain body types

Many people think you need to have a “perfect” body to look good in boudoir photos. However, this simply isn’t the case. Boudoir photography is about celebrating you and your body irrespective of size, shape, gender or age.  It’s an opportunity to recognise who you are right now, and embrace it.  Every body is uniquely beautiful and we can help you show it.

At the House of G, we understand how to work with diverse body types, using flattering angles, creative lighting, and thoughtful posing to capture your best self. Boudoir is about confidence and self-expression, not conforming to societal standards of beauty. Whether you are curvy, slender, tall, short, or anything in between, boudoir photography can be an empowering experience that fosters self-acceptance and body positivity. A session with us is an opportunity to reconnect with your body, appreciate its individuality, and celebrate it in a way that is liberating.

2. I’m not confident enough

Just as common as the belief that you need to have a ”perfect” body is the belief that you need to be confident to look good on camera.

It’s not just different body types that can benefit from boudoir photography, different personalities can as well.  You don’t need to be confident to be sexy, you can be shy, demure, even submissive and still be seductive and sensual.

A boudoir session is a place of fantasy, a safe space where you can be whoever you want to be, from demure seductress to glorious goddess. It can be a confidence boosting experience; boudoir is about expressing your inner and best self without fear or judgement.

3. You have to wear lingerie or get naked

Boudoir photography is often associated with lingerie or nudity, but it doesn’t have to be limited to those options. In fact, choosing not to wear lingerie or pose nude can offer a refreshing and creative approach that emphasises personal expression, comfort, and style.

Dressing up can be just as sexy as taking clothes off.  The outfit you choose speaks volumes about who you are.  Whether it’s a latex catsuit, an elegant dress or a cosy jumper, you can wear whatever makes you feel confident and empowered.

Ultimately, boudoir photography is about celebrating yourself in whatever way feels most authentic to you. Whether fully clothed, partially revealed, or going for alternative wardrobe choices, the most important thing is to feel comfortable, confident, and in control of how you’re portrayed.

4. I don’t have anyone to give the photos to

Boudoir photography is often thought of as a gift for a partner, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, many people choose to do boudoir sessions for themselves, and that’s an incredibly empowering and rewarding experience. You don’t need a partner to enjoy or appreciate boudoir photography; it’s about about celebrating your own body, finding new confidence and feeling comfortable in your own skin

For some, a boudoir shoot can mark a personal milestone, such as achieving a fitness goal, recovering from a challenging period, or simply embracing self-love. It allows you to see yourself in a new light, capturing your unique beauty in a way that’s both artistic and intimate. This can boost self-esteem and provide a tangible reminder of your inner and outer strength.

Without the pressure of doing it for someone else, you can concentrate on what makes you feel beautiful. Whether that means wearing your favourite outfit, playing with a fantasy, or simply enjoying being the centre of attention, the session becomes a celebration of who you are. The photos become a lasting keepsake, reminding you of your journey and growth.

Boudoir photography is about empowerment, self-expression, and personal celebration. It doesn’t require anyone else’s validation – it’s a gift you can give to yourself, capturing your essence in a way that reflects who you are and who you can become.

5. You need to be photogenic / experienced / a model

The idea that you need to already be good in front of a camera to have your photo taken is a common misconception. Boudoir photography at its core is about taking someone “ordinary” and making them feel special.

It comes from the feeling of not being good enough – something that we have all felt at some point in our lives – which is the root of many of these myths.  But the truth is that you are, and by having a boudoir experience you will be able to discover new confidence in yourself and see that you are not only enough, but that you are extraordinary.

Our photographer, G, will  help you with posing and facial expressions, and guide you throughout your session so that you get the absolute best from your time in the studio.

None of the images shown on our website or Instagram are of professional models.  They’re ordinary people, like you, who wanted to look amazing and discover their best selves.

6. Everybody will see my pictures

One of the most common concerns when booking a boudoir session is the fear of others seeing your images. However, we take your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Your photos are yours and yours alone, and no one will see them unless you choose to share them.

The House of G has strict privacy policies in place, and we will always seek your written consent before using any images for our portfolio or marketing purposes. The images we share are from clients who have given us explicit permission. You have full control over who sees your photos, and you can decide if you’d like them to remain completely private.

After your shoot, your photos will be uploaded to a private, password protected gallery so only you and those you choose to share with will be able to see them. The purpose of boudoir photography is to make you feel empowered and confident, and that includes making sure you feel safe and secure throughout the process. You can enjoy the experience without worrying about anyone seeing your images without your permission.

7. Doing a boudoir photoshoot will trigger my gender dysphoria or body dysmorphia

When planning a boudoir shoot, it’s crucial to ensure the experience is empowering and affirming, especially for anyone who struggles with gender dysphoria or body dysmorphia. At the House of G, we believe boudoir is for everybody, irrespective of their gender, gender presentation or any insecurities they may have about their appearance, and we are sensitive to the needs of trans and gender nonconforming people. Our photographer, G, is a femme presenting, gender-fluid person who understands the challenges of being comfortable with their own body. Our goal is to work closely with you to create images that make you feel truly good about yourself.

Before the shoot, we’ll have a one-on-one consultation to understand your unique needs, any triggers, and what will help you feel confident and seen. This ensures that your experience is personalised, and that we can avoid any elements that might cause discomfort related to gender dysphoria or body dysmorphia. We’ll talk about whether you want to emphasise certain features or avoid others, we’ll use poses, wardrobe choices, and lighting to align with how you feel best. Whether your style is masculine, feminine, or more fluid, we’ll create an environment that respects your gender expression and helps you feel empowered.

Our sessions celebrate your body exactly as it is. We focus on self-love, using our skills and experience to highlight what makes you feel good about yourself. We aim to create a positive, joyful space that celebrates body diversity and helps you connect with your body in a supportive way.

Throughout the shoot, we ensure the environment is judgement-free and affirming. The experience is designed to boost your confidence and help you express yourself authentically, without triggering any feelings of dysphoria or discomfort.

By working closely with you, we aim to make boudoir photography a safe and empowering experience, allowing you to express your true self and walk away with images that reflect your confidence, beauty, and authenticity.
